The game

Four players, 144 tiles and plenty of conversation

Mahjong is a tile game that began in China in the 19th century. Four people play: each draws and discards tiles to build a winning hand of sets, a bit like rummy but with tiles instead of cards.

You can learn it in an afternoon and enjoy it for years. Many people come for the game and stay for the table: it's a perfect reason to meet up every week.

The styles we play

American

Uses jokers and an official card of hands that the National Mah Jongg League publishes every year. The most popular style at social tables.

Chinese / Hong Kong

The classic style, with 144 tiles including flowers and seasons. Simple rules and quick games: a great place to start.

Riichi (Japanese)

More strategic, with 136 tiles and its own scoring system. Many people know it from video games and anime.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to play?

No. Most people who join have never played. We organise beginner classes and tables where every hand is explained.

How much does it cost?

Joining the community is free. Some classes or tournaments may have a fee, and we'll always say so before you sign up.

Do I need my own mahjong set?

No. Tables are set up with whoever has a set. If you have one, tick the host option on the form.

What do you do with my details?

We only use them to tell you about mahjong in the DR, on the channels you agree to. We never sell your information or show your number publicly.

Which mahjong style is played in the DR?

There are players of all three styles. American is the most common at social tables, but we want groups for everyone.
